WAIT! One thing they don’t mention: you don’t have to actually do the restore in order to do this.
Instead, just do what they posted on iPod Hacks. You enable hard-drive mode in iTunes by going under options. There’s a hidden folder that you can show through view options: ipod_control. then click into a subfolder called device. then look for a file named sysinfo. Open with notepad and you shall see:
EX (not the same for all, this is for 4G):
buildID: 0×03028000 (3.0.2)
visibleBuildID: 0×03028000 (3.0.2)
change it into an earlier version so you updater will update with the new pics.
EX:
buildID: 0×03018000 (3.0.1)
visibleBuildID: 0×03018000 (3.0.1)
I just changed 3.02 to 3.01. Now save.
Update using the updater and it’s all fine! No formatting, and you can do this again if you want to switch back to the Apple version. (Just run a fresh copy of the Updater from Apple)

I just tried it out my iPod 3rd-Gen, worked pretty nice.

Had no problems installing the update.
this is great post, hte ipod wizard is very easy to use and to edit the firmware. the only problem i had was uploading the firmware to my ipod because that version is already in it and the updater wont let me update it. any help plx?? thx

Because the person who wrote it didn’t write it for OSX yet. He is in the process of working with a person who programs on the platform (no, not someone who works with Apple) to release a Mac client. This isn’t an official Apple product or anything like that, it’s just a program somebody took the time to write and he happened to use/program in Windows.

Watch out though, I’ve already seen three people who managed to break their iPod’s with this. By break, I mean the iPod doesn’t respond anymore to the clickwheel.

i cant seem to find the updater on my comp after i click open updater in ipod wizard
i know where it is in my comp and i can locate it outside the program but when i open that exact same file in the program i cant see it or anything
please help i really want to do this

LOOK EVERY TIME I GO TO USE THE UPDATER ITS UPDATES BUT I CANT GET IT TO RESTORE TO MY COMPUTER IT NEDDS TO BE REFORMATED TO THIS COMPUTER BECAUSE I HAVE LOST MY THE SOFTWARE AND EVERYTHING ELSE EXCEPT FOR THE LOADING DOCK AND USB CORD ITS A 20G IPOD AND EVERY TIME I TURN IT ON IT SHOWS ME A FOLDER WITH A EXCLAMATION SIGN
