Linux On Microsoft MN-700 Router

mn700

Gather round folks and watch as reader Liam beats a Microsoft MN-700 router into submission. The router normally runs a Windows CE based operating system and is considered problematic on its good days. The install is pretty involved (more so than a WRT), but when complete you can install any of the firmwares compatible with the ASUS WL500G, like openWRT. You have to open the router and attach a cable to the JTAG connector. After that you upgrade the bootloader so you can install the firmware. Not really out of reach if you’re desperate; if you own this router you probably are.

  1. I’ve been looking around, and found a few forums that are discussing it. I’ve seen some links for the datasheets for the chips in it, and some people have gotten the USB cables hooked up. No one seems to be able to get the cam to talk to the pc, add a memcard slot, or get the vid off the cam.

    Hook it up, hackaday!!!

  2. he probably thought that he could post a hack of the cvs digital camera and look like he had some latebreaking news (been done plenty already) not realizing that everyone who actually keeps track of these things is really wanting the cvs camcorder hack. man,i sure hope that’s not the case-but i’ve been looking ever since the camcorder was released by cvs,and invisisam is 100% correct-some progress has been made, but no real stuff yet.

  3. i wonder if i can get this to work on my little brother’s mn-500. it’s like the damn thing suffers from autism half the time (the router, not my brother). truely one of the worst routers out there.

  4. gotcha is kinda correct, if you look at it from his point of view. If you keep taking lots of pics with the PV2, print them out, and make a flip book, you’ve got your movie right there.

    thanks gotcha!

  5. Why dont all you camera hounds be patient? If you want to hack it that bad, then do a search, otherwise just chill out, sheesh. Its not like they cant make more than one post in a day.

Oh and gotcha, the hack walkthrough supposedly coming today was for the CVS disposable camcorder, not the still camera, but thanks for the old news anyways.

  6. Hey! I have this router. It has never failed me as a router. Microsoft got out of the wifi business but they shouldn’t have. Plus their hardware tech support is always excellent.
